The door shuts when the sensor cannot detect anyone within its range. The difference is that swing doors open using a swinging motion, while sliding doors, as the name suggests, slide the door panels (there can be more than one) along a track to create the required opening.
Swing doors have the advantage of taking up less space, but the disadvantage of not really being able handle two-way traffic well, whilst Sliding doors take up more space, but are more suited to two-way traffic.
